    The Eight Pillars of Democracy

If there is one word that is most often used yet commonly misunderstood, it would be democracy. Although most of the time it is used interchangeably with freedom, the truth is, freedom and democracy is not synonymous to each other. Rather, democracy is the realization and putting into  practice freedom. As what a famous political leader once said on how he describes democracy, it is the  government of the people, by the people and for the people. With that thought in mind, it is only important for people who long for democracy know what exactly it is about as well as the principles in which it revolves around.

    • Democracy is sovereignty of the people. This means that a state is created through the people’s will and consent, therefore, It should run with the interest of the people in mind. It also implies that the leaders are servants of the people not their masters.
    • Democracy dwells on the principle that majority rules which states that the best alternative to a choice should be what most of the people in a particular place decided or voted. While majority rules, democracy also sees to it the the rights of the minority are still to be respected and exercised.
    • Democracy is all about ensuring the basic human rights of the people including the right to live, the right to own property as well as the right to education.
    • Democracy also gives importance to free and fair elections meaning, every one who are duly citizens of a country, even women, has a right to vote especially regarding matters of national interest.
    • Democracy is also equality before the law—whether you are rich or poor, young or old, you are subject to the laws governing the country that you are part in.
    • Democracy is exercising the due process of law and greatly dwells on the fact that everyone accused of a crime or mishap is considered innocent until proven guilty.
    • Democracy is about social, economic as well as political pluralism which means that there should be no monopoly when it comes to fame, fortune and power.
    • Democracy really gives importance to tolerance, pragmatism, cooperation and compromise to be able to sustain or achieve peace.

As what a famous saying goes, “Your freedom ends where other people’s rights begin” democracy is not just about doing the things that you need and want but taking into consideration other people’s rights as well. When you are able to fully understand democracy you’d be able to know its real essence which could really help you attain the kind of country that you truly wish to have.
