John Lennon sure knew what mattered. His song, Power to the People, rings true for democratic countries. Democracy, with strength coming from the total number of a country’s occupants, makes sure that each and every single individual’s opinion is important. It’s each one’s power for the greater good. If it’s power that matters, then let’s check on some other beneficial aspects of democracy.
Equality
Since the strength of each individual is given much emphasis in a democratic country, equality is well observed. No matter the social standing one’s person is, his or her opinion is respected. Racial profiling is discouraged, so is nepotism, abuse of political power or of political connections. Equal opportunity is maintained at the utmost high. Equality also creates the opportunity for every individual to have his or her voice heard. This creates the impression of no one having a voice too small or too big.
Equal Right to Power
Since equality is practiced and observed, all citizens are given the chance to run for a political position. Though factors like reputation or education background are considered in winning, still charisma and the people’s choice are the final decision. This makes the impression that no one is of the least importance, giving emphasis to everyone’s talents and skills. Also, having an equal right to power allows a democratic country to grow even faster – since a running candidate would need his or her country’s votes, he or she would need to be not only popular and talented, but would need a new, good and different approach on serving the public.
Freedom as we all like to believe
The main point that democracy would like to focus on is freedom. For democratic countries, a person able to express and live out their freedom is synonymous to a peaceful community. Though it may seem contradictory, with each person’s unique and own perspective of things, freedom is still defined by the greater number of people – thus, going back to Lennon’s Power to the People – giving a unique and ever changing identity. Such, freedom is termed from the people’s union and respect for each other’s beliefs and choices.
A democratic government focuses on its people’s welfare. Equality assures people that they would have their voices heard. The right to power allows the best leaders to be recognized. And freedom, both personal and general, allows people to express what they really believe. These three main points of democracy can make things work out for the best.
